The One That We Want is Max and Laura

March 26th, 2007

theTHEATREaddict here with his final thoughts on GREASE: YOU’RE THE ONE THAT WE WANT.

So it has come to an end with the proper outcome. Never would these two have been cast in a conventional audition. David Ian’s “Wow” reaction may have been scripted or perhaps he really believes he is f*#@ed. The show was yet again wonky. I assume the final numbers were pre taped with all 4 finalist combinations. The losers seemed too polished and professional in singing back up. No matter what the acting ability I can’t imagine having your dreams smashed and then being so perky and happy doing back up for the winners. I don’t think any reality show loser has been that stoic.

I am excited for Laura and Max. Good for them. I am not sure how all of this will wash out. It will be fascinating to see how the show does and if this entire experiment was a good one. This could have introduced a whole new audience to Broadway and I think it did the opposite and turned some people off. At the very least for us theatre addicts, we will now have years of “where are they now” to play and will get a little excited when we open a Playbill and read a name of a “You’re The One That We Want” contestant!

HOLY FRACK…

March 25th, 2007

Needless to say, if you have yet to watch tonight’s season finale of BATTLESTAR GALACTICA, stop reading now, as the following contains spoilers.

If there’s one thing you can count on BATTLESTAR GALACTICA to deliver, it’s a fantastic season finale and true to form, tonight’s finale did not disappoint. Forget the return of Starbuck (more thoughts on that later), which I saw coming the second Lee Adama jumped into his Viper (loved how he grabbed his uniform as if he was putting on his batsuit!). The reason the finale left my jaw on the floor is that we actually saw Earth. We don’t have to simply take Starbuck for her word. She told Lee, “I’ve been to earth, I know where it is and I’m going to take us there.” The producers made a conscience decision to show us the planet. Earth exists! I can now sleep soundly knowing that all the hardship, death and and eye loss will be worth it in the end. Our intrepid travelers will reach earth, eventually.

In terms of that ‘other mystery’, you know, the one where there might be a cylon (or four!) on Galactica. I was quite surprised as to how it was handled. I honestly expected Colonel Tigh (never one to shy away from violence) to pull out a gun and shoot everyone in the room, including himself — with the final shot of the season panning down on a Cylon ‘regeneration bath’ as one of either Tyrol, Anders, Tigh or Tori was reborn as a Cylon. The implication that there’s not just one, but four Cylons on Galactica is stunning. I can’t wait to see how it plays out next season.

Finally, the most boring (or predictable) aspect of the finale, was the trial of Baltar (or as I’ve cleverly dubbed it, GALACTICA & ORDER). While Baltar being found not-guilty came as no surprise, I did find the way in which he was acquitted quite clever. Lee Adama’s impassioned speech with regards to the state of the fleet really made sense. Everyone in the fleet, from the President on down has seriously fracked up yet been worthy of a second chance. Why is Baltar the only citizen not to receive one? Serious kudos to the Galactica writers for finding a legitimate reason to find Baltar not-guilty. I really was wondering how they would pull that off — and they did so successfully.

Some final questions for the audience if I may….

A BATTLESTAR GALACTICA Reminder

March 25th, 2007

Just a quick heads up to all my fellow BATTLESTAR GALACTICA addicts out there. Remember to set your PVR/DVR/TIVO for a few minutes after 11PM if you’re planning on recording tonight’s season finale. Are You Psyched for Tonight’s BATTLESTAR Finale?

March 25th, 2007

Needless to say, I’m psyched for tonight’s third season finale of BATTLESTAR GALACTICA. And if this Boston Herald article is any indication, I’m not the only one who’s excited. Author Mark Perigard promises the Cylons are closer than we think.

Cries of “Holy frak!” will arise from fans all over the country after the final moments air. The “Battlestar” universe will never be the same after the revelations in “Crossroads Part II.”

Some fans will be jazzed for the new season. Others will accuse the show of jumping the shark. But no other TV show on any other network has shown such a willingness to both surprise its viewers and rip apart its own formula in such a challenging, creative way. Ronald D. Moore, executive producer/writer, refuses to take the easy route and let his cast or his viewers get comfortable.

T-Minus six hours and thirty minutes in counting (assuming you’re on the eastern seaboard!). This TV Addict’s prediction — the finale will end with a shocking Cylon reveal and a possible death. Post away with your predictions and thoughts.

Jenny’s This Week on TV

March 25th, 2007

Welcome to This Week on TV! First of all, congrats to two of my favorite shows, Men in Trees & Grey’s Anatomy, along with Brothers & Sisters, Ugly Betty, The Bachelor, Boston Legal, Dancing with the Stars, Desperate Housewives, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, Jimmy Kimmel Live & Lost. They have joined America’s Funniest Home Videos, Supernanny & Wife Swap in the RENEWED FOR NEXT SEASON column. There are a lot of big things on this week, so let’s get right to it!

SUNDAY

Sunday is all about season finales! At 8/7c on NBC, find out who are chosen to play Danny and Sandy on Broadway on the finale of Grease: You’re the One That I Want.

At 9/8c on VH1, check out the 1st season finale of The Surreal Life: Fame Games.

Then at 10/9c on SciFi, catch the explosive season finale of Battlestar Galactica. Good news (& possible bad?) for BSG fans… They upped the episode number for next season from 13 to 22. I had heard though, that if that happened, they would most likely make next season the last. I haven’t heard any more about that, so maybe it’s just rumors.

Finally, if you are lucky enough to have premium channels, catch the season finales of Rome on HBO at 9/8c and The L Word on Showtime at 10/9c.

Thoughts on OCTOBER ROAD, GREY’S ANATOMY and SCRUBS

March 23rd, 2007

Was anyone else incredibly disappointed by last night’s second episode of OCTOBER ROAD? While stars Bryan Greenberg and Laura Prepon are holding their own, I’m not sure even they can help prop up some of the worst writing to hit TV since the heydays of Aaron Spelling. When Greenberg starting singing showtunes outside the dean’s window, I was this close to turning off my TV. Rest assured ABC, I’m not ready to drive off this road just yet, but I’m getting awfully close.

Speaking of disappointment, last night’s GREY’S ANATOMY continued the show’s streak of mediocre episodes since the second part of the big three part February Ferry Crash. I honestly found myself bored, which is an adjective I’ve never associated with GREY’S ANATOMY. Here’s hoping one of the ‘ideas’ in Dr. Sloane’s plan to be chief included Seattle Grace becoming interesting again.

And finally SCRUBS. As much as critics and fans are quick to point out that the show is on its last legs, SCRUBS never fails to surprise. While the death of a cast member has been rumoured all season, but truth be told, I thought Jordan would be the one to go. Sure Nurse Laverne was the obvious choice, but SCRUBS rarely chooses the obvious path, and Laverne seemed almost too obvious. For six years we’ve watched weekly aspatients die in Sacred Heart. It’s going to be really interesting to see what happens next week when a true member of the family passes on.
