Hooked on AMERICAN IDOL

March 28th, 2007

After years of ignoring it, mocking my friends who were hooked on it and doing my absolute best to never jump on the IDOL bandwagon — I’ve finally caved. It’s a sad day for theTVaddict, as it has become apparent that I’m hooked on AMERICAN IDOL.

How exactly did this happen? Well, like most things in my life — I blame the CW. GILMORE GIRLS and VERONICA MARS have been in repeat mode and hiatus respectively for what seems like months. Subsequently, my Tuesday nights are pretty empty. Enter Randy, Simon, Paula and Ryan. Throw in a few tears, witty banter, some really bad renditions of classic 60’s hits and one incredibly clueless contestant named Sanjaya. Can you really blame me if I want to stick around to see what happens next?

Is America really going to turn Sanjaya into an Idol? Is Melinda Doolittle’s ‘dear in headlights’ look of surprise whenever she gets complimented all a brilliant act? Will anyone call Chris Richardson out on the fact that he’s turning into a Justin Timberlake clone? I can’t believe I’m going to say this, but I really am curious to find out.

Can You Spot the Fake TV Pilot?

March 27th, 2007

Our friends over at BuzzSugar just posted a great challenge in order to test how much you know about what’s in development for Fall ‘07. Click here to guess which pilots are real and which are fake. For the record, theTVaddict scored high enough to become a ‘network intern’. Which I’m okay with, assuming my boss isn’t one of those egomaniacal Hollywood types who like to throw things.

Can YouTube Revive a Failed Pilot?

March 27th, 2007

YouTube is quickly becoming the go to website for failed comedy pilots hoping to be resurrected by vocal fans. Bill Lawrence gave NOBODY’S WATCHING a second life when he ‘leaked’ it onto the internet and now Jon Stewart’s hoping to do the same with THREE STRIKES.

THREE STRIKES is excutive produced by Jon Stewart and is written by writers who’ve worked on FRASIER and LARRY SANDERS. Click here to check it out and be sure to come back to theTVaddict.com and comment on whether or not Comedy Central made the right move to pass on the pilot.

Save One Show

March 27th, 2007

This week, E! Online’s Kristin released the candidates for her annual SAVE ONE SHOW campaign. Unlike previous years, this year’s poll seems exceptionally harsh with seventeen shows on the brink of cancellation. The list includes, 30 ROCK, THE CLASS, CLOSE TO HOME, CROSSING JRODAN, FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS, GILMORE GIRLS, HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER, JERICHO, MEDIUM, THE NINE, ONE TREE HILL, SCRUBS, SIX DEGREES, STUDIO 60 ON THE SUNSET STRIP, SUPERNATURAL, VERONICA MARS and WHAT ABOUT BRIAN. Pretty much an impossible choice for anyone, let alone a full fledged TV addict.

That said I’ve been putting far too much thought into how I’m going to narrow down my choice and I thought I’d take a moment to share my process with you.

Elimination Round One: Shows I don’t watch
The first step is the easiest, as there happens to be nine shows on the block that for one reason or another, I simply don’t watch. Say goodbye to: CLOSE TO HOME, CROSSING JORDAN, MEDIUM, THE NINE, ONE TREE HILL, SIX DEGREES, WHAT ABOUT BRIAN

Elimination Round Two: Enjoy, but not obsessed with
Step two is a bit harder as I’m going to have to eliminate two shows that I enjoy on a semi-regular basis, but aren’t given season passes on my PVR. Say goodbye to: JERICHO and SUPERNATURAL (Note to SUPERNATURAL FANS: I’m so impressed with your passion and love for your show, please don’t send some bad-ass ghosts after me!)

Amrie’s Take on TV: THE TUDORS

March 27th, 2007

the tudors

I’m not proud to say that the only thing I remember from European History in high school and college about Henry VIII is the fact that he married Anne Boleyn and that he fooled around with her sister Mary.

Maybe you’re like me. Maybe you only know that he had 6 wives, or you know that he liked to “take a mistress,” or you know that he had some illegitimate kids. Maybe that’s the only thing you know.

I’m happy to tell you that the minute details of his extraordinary early life are not required knowledge before you dive into the 10-part miniseries that explores the world of King Henry VIII.

Showtime was kind enough to send over the first 6 episodes of this amazing show and I’m indebted to them for life.

Rather than focus on the things you may have learned in your European History classes, there are 5 basic things you should know about this show before diving in, head first, and enjoying every minute of it.

Still Frakked Up!

March 26th, 2007

To quote my recent Twitter message from forty minutes ago, “I’m still trying to wrap my head around the idea that Col Tigh is a Cylon!” Quite honestly I think I’m still in shock. Once again, BATTLESTAR GALACTICA head honcho’s Ronald D. Moore and David Eick gave fans a head-spinning finale that will leave us talking, guessing and speculating for months on end.

I’ve spent much of the day online, reading fan reaction and interviews from around the web. Here are some of my favourites.

Executive producer Ron Moore discusses thrilling ‘Galactica’ cliffhanger Post-Gazette

”Galactica” stars talk about the shocking finale! Entertainment Weekly

BSG Composer Bear McCreary talks about the final song montage Brian McCreary’s Blog

What the Frak Just Happened! Read viewer comments direct from the uber geeks on the official scifi.com Galactica Message board

For the record, my favourite theory belongs to Maureen Ryan who writes THE WATCHER for the Chicago Tribune. Her belief is that there’s been an ongoing Cylon civil war, and that in fact everyone is really a Cylon, that humanity ceased to exist a long time ago and the war has been happening over and over again. A theory that certainly makes sense if we look back at the prophecy. “All of this has happened before. All of this will happen again.” How many days until January 2008?

DRIVE Revs Our Engine!

March 26th, 2007

nathan fillion drive

Ever feel guilty for wishing that just once, the participants of THE AMAZING RACE would crash and burn? If so, then does FOX has the series for you. DRIVE – debuting on Sunday, April 15 at 8 p.m. ET – kicks off with a pilot that offers thrills, chills, laughs and a cliffhanger to die for. In other words, this is how to get our attention!

Centering on an underground, illegal race, DRIVE quickly introduces us to a diverse group of participants, each of whom has his or her own reason for competing. For Alex Tully (FIREFLY’s Nathan Fillion), it’s in the hope of locating his missing – and possibly kidnapped – wife. New mom Wendy (Melanie Lynskey) is running from her husband and toward a new life. And Winston Salazar (UGLY BETTY’s Kevin Alejandro, aka Justin’s dad) literally has his eyes on the prize – rumored to be $32 million – and an unexpected passenger in newly discovered half-brother Sean (J.D. Pardo).

There are moments of sheer brilliance scattered throughout the first hour, such as when the contestants – who do not know where the finish line is or even who they are competing against, but receive each new clue via cell phone – turn a hotel’s parking lot into a nightmare of choreographed chaos upon learning of their next destination. And anyone who believes the age of the CB radio to be long gone will think again following a clever twist.
