RUNAWAY Cancelled

October 18th, 2006

File this under news that will surprise nobody. The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that the CW has cancelled RUNAWAY. After four episodes, the show could only pull in an average of 1.9 million viewers. Rather then being known as the CW’s first original drama, RUNAWAY will forever be known as the show responsible for EVERWOOD’S demise.

This TV Addict’s next question, which CW exec is getting shown the door for that bone-headed decision.

Common Sense Says:

Ahh yes, flip two lineups, bill Sunday as “Family Night,” then cancel the show Dawn & Co. HAD TO HAVE after one family-night airing. Seriously, is Jamie Kellner or Jordan Levin available to head the programming dept.? Please? They’ve now surrounded 7th Heaven with a full night of repeats. Exactly how is that productive? Maybe more importantly, where will they now stick the midseason soap “Hidden Palms,” which could actually succeed? Certainly not up against Desp. Housewives, though.

Let this be a lesson to all networks. You don’t cancel critical-darlings & cult faves like Arrested Development & Everwood…only to replace them with unproven farts like “Happy Hour” and “Runaway.” And stop copying every hit & saturating the airwaves with them. We can only handle so much kidnapping/vanishing/escaping runaways. Prison Break did it first and best, and we’re just getting sucked into more weekly “commitments.”

Yet again, you live up to your name, ‘Common Sense’ - Well Said.

Tim G. Says:

Yay! Here’s hoping this makes them appreciate Veronica Mars more!

Logan: Is someone jealous?
Veronic: No, jealous would involve piano wire.

starbase135 Says:

I had to roar with laughter when I read the news last night. Literally EVERY sane TV viewer could have predicted the fate of Runaway to Dawn Ostroff. We might laugh at her stupidity but actually this whole network and its executives are pathetic. Eventually a lot more great shows (like Everwood) will die because of their incompetence…and unfortunately there is nothing funny about that.

Vance Says:

hear ye hear ye

I’m totally with you. This systematic and compulsive dumbing down of the airwaves, relegation of anything interesting, intelligent and different can only prove counter-productive for television and the media in general. The CW’s tagline is ‘Free to Be’; Free to Be What? Free to Be Identikit? Free to Be Bland?? What does that promote on every level? We are supposed to think what? Our kids are supposed to think what? Not at all??

tvaddict and Common Sense I’m finally in your camp now (bet you never thought that would happen, lol). I mean, the fact that they pulled a show they knew people were watching and loved to take such a huge risk only to show what little faith they have in themselves and their network is outraging and shows wonders about what we can expect from this network in the future.

Sorry that they still seem to be screwing all you Everwood fans over. I’d suggest boycotting the CW, but they air Veronica Mars now so that’s a no go, lol.

nathan Says:

I think cancelling EVERWOOD was the dumbest move any network has made EVER! Think about it…the two shows that knocked it out were Runaway(which has runaway and will never come back to TV) and 7th heaven, a place were there arent even 7 major cast members anymore! Come on CW….how stupid can this network be! At least they can admit fault and beg some of the cast to come back in a spinoff sort of fashion. Maybe that would spike ratings a little on their sturggling network with only 5 good shows(GG, mars, smallville, supernatural, and OTH)!

Sean Joudry Says:

So, does this mean AT ALL that they might go back to the bartering table with the cast of Everwood? Or is just too late now?

John Says:

All the main players, both actors and behind the camera people, are already involved in other projects. It is Humpty Dumpty all over again.

Rebekah Says:

Most everybody on this page is just stupid. I loved Runaway. They should not have gotten rid of it. I’m just glad that they got rid of Everwood, THAT was the stupid show!!!!

Alexis Says:

I think it could have been good…Too bad it’s been cancelled. As far as I’m concerned, Everwood sucked and 7th heaven is hell to watch. GG isn’t all that good either so far. Thank god for OTH.
And CW? The WB was FAR better.

Jenny Says:

Runaway is amazinhg no matter wat people say!!! come back on the air! i use to love 7th heaven it is not interesting anymore get all the characters back and more drama don’t let me down!!

Megan Says:

umm hello…why the hell would you cancell runawayy it was awesomee
and i could see it going somewheree..gahhh…that makes me soo mad
now the only other good shows on the cw are oth and antm…like hello
bring it back and get rid of shit like ‘girlfriends” or whatever the hell the

simona Says:

marissa Says:

well i like it a little do u think they might put it back on again it was getting good

Insanity Says:

Ugh, you guys are kidding, right? The idea was really good, they just didn’t give it time to progress. They should have waited at least 10 episodes if they were to cancel it. I wish it would come back!
